Prevent Cramps and Fatigue
|
| How to Avoid Cramps during Exercise and Events |
|
1. If you are an athlete who gets bad cramps during exercise, then you have probably been told to drink more fluids, particularly water and sports drinks. Dehydration can be a problem for any athlete and being well-hydrated before an event should always be your #1 priority.
But what if you are already drinking lots of fluids, so much that you are racing to the bathroom before every event, and you still cannot get through an event without cramping?
2. Most people will probably tell you to increase your potassium intake. Low amounts of potassium in the bloodstream can cause cramping, so most athletes who cramp are told to start eating more bananas and other high-potassium foods to supplement their potassium levels. For some athletes this may do the trick, but for others, this does not help at all.
3. What people don't seem to realize is that some athletes are "salty sweaters" who sweat potassium at a normal rate but have abnormally high levels of salt in their sweat. These athletes can taste the salt on their skin after exercise and often have crusty white salt stains on the clothes they work out in. If you are one of these athletes, then increasing your SALT may be what will help you most.
4. How to increase your salt:
A number of foods and drinks will increase your salt levels and should be added to your diet several days before a big athletic event. The additional salt in your system will also help you to retain the fluids you drink so that they do not flush through you right before game time.
Pretzels are a good low fat snack that have lots of sodium and can be eaten the day of the event. Within a few hours of your big event, however, you might want to limit your SALT supplements to liquids or tablets, so that you aren't trying to digest a lot of food during exercise.
|
| However, the actual reason why you cramp is this |
|
When you start with any form of exercise or sporting activity, your muscles release lactic acid and ammonia, which are needed to protect yourself from over-exercising. As these acids build up in the muscles, the flexibility of the muscles becomes restricted up to the point of cramping.
In other words, when excess acids build up, the muscles cannot recover to the point where it was before the exercise and as this contraction and expansion length of the muscles becomes shorter due to the buildup of acids, it gets to the point where the muscle start to cramp.
Thus, to avoid excessive build up of acids in the muscles, you have to detoxify the muscles during the exercise or sport event.
