| Something Pediatricians Never Used to See: Type 2 Diabetes |
 |
|
by Susan BrinkWashington PostMarch 23, 2011
Type 2 diabetes used to be seen almost exclusively in adults‚ but in the past decade‚ cases in people under 20 years of age have increased to tens of thousands in the United States.
About 3‚700 Americans under age 20 are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes annually‚ according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "In a little more than 10 years‚ the numbers went from nothing to something‚" says Larry Deeb‚ a pediatric endocrinologist and past president of the medicine and science division of the American Diabetes Association. "And that's something to worry about." Diabetes can lead to complications such as heart disease‚ kidney failure‚ limb amputations‚ and blindness‚ and these concerns are even greater for young people who will experience the disease for a longer period of time.
Although type 2 diabetes has been associated with being overweight or obese‚ other risk factors include family history‚ ethnicity‚ genetics‚ or children whose mothers had gestational diabetes. Many more Americans have pre–diabetes‚ with higher blood sugar than normal‚ though not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. In either diabetes or pre–diabetes‚ patients can improve their health and reduce the risk of complications through better health management‚ weight loss‚ increased physical activity‚ and improved diets. With the increasing number of young people being diagnosed‚ more pediatricians are aware of the possibility of the disease and are starting to look for it.

| Poll: Many patients with diabetes are uneducated about hypoglycemia |
|
MedscapeApril 14, 2011
An online survey of 2‚530 adults with type 2 diabetes found that many of them did not know hypoglycemia risks‚ with 27% not knowing that skipping meals is one of its major causes and 35% unaware that certain medications might aggravate the condition.
Although 52% of respondents said they were worried about suffering hypoglycemia‚ at least 17% didn't know that dizziness and shakiness were among its major symptoms‚ researchers found.

Why I Am So Tired
|
|

For a couple years I've been blaming it on iron poor blood, lack of vitamins, dieting and a dozen other maladies. Now I found out the real reason. I'm tired because I'm overworked.
-
-
- The population of this country is 237 million.
- 104 million are retired.
- That leaves 133 million to do the work.
- There are 85 million in school,
- which leave 48 million to do the work.
- Of this, there are 29 million employed by the federal government.
- This leaves 19 million to do the work.
- Four million are in the Armed Forces,
- which leaves 15 million to do the work.
- Take from the total the 14,800,000 people who work for State and City Government and that leaves 200,000 to do the work.
- There are 188,000 in hospitals, so that leaves 12,000 to do the work.
- Now, there are 11,998 people in Prisons.
- That leaves just two people to do the work.
- You and me . . . and you're sitting there reading jokes...
