Candida worries

What is Candida?

Candidiasis or thrush is a fungal infection that results from an overgrowth of yeast (a type of fungus) anywhere in the body. Candidiasis is also technically known as candidosis, moniliasis, and oidiomycosis.

There are more than 20 species of Candida, the most common being Candida albicans. These fungi live on all surfaces of our bodies.

Under certain conditions, they can become so numerous they cause infections, particularly in warm and moist areas.

Examples of such infections are vaginal yeast infections, thrush (infection of tissues of the oral cavity), skin and diaper rash, and nailbed infections.
Vaginal yeast infection, which is the most common form of vaginitis is often referred to as vaginal Candidiasis.

Most of these candidal infections are superficial and clear up easily with treatment. Infections of the nailbeds often require prolonged therapy.
Rarely, the yeast infection may spread throughout the body. In systemic candidal disease (in which the fungus enters the bloodstream and spreads throughout the body), up to 45% of people may die.

Causes of Candida

It is important to realize that everyone has Candida. It is a microorganism that is present in your gut, part of the health system that helps you to digest food and stay fit and well.
When people talk about Candidiasis, they are really talking about the excess growth of Candida.
If Candida is not something that you 'catch' like a virus, what are the causes of this excess growth of Candida?

Antibiotics
The most common culprit in an outbreak of Candida is antibiotics.

A full course of antibiotics kills the harmful bacteria for which it is prescribed, but it also destroys beneficial and friendly bacteria that live in your gut.
This can leave your body defenseless to harmful bacteria and fungi, such as the fast-growing Candida. This yeast quickly dominates the small intestine and causes problems.

There are times when you do need antibiotics, but the truth is that doctors prescribe it unnecessarily for for many health issues , like the common cold or a sore throat.
Make sure there is no alternative treatment to your condition. If not, take an good probiotic supplement during and after the treatment to replenish the healthy bacteria.

Sugar
The modern diet is like a feast for Candida, since it is a yeast that needs sugar to thrive and multiply.
That includes sugar itself, foods containing sugar and also anything that converts to sugar. Refined carbohydrates like processed food made with white flour, other refined grains and alcohol can all contribute to Candida growth.

A healthy immune system should be able to keep Candida at bay. However, a diet rich in sugar actually depresses your immune system, leaving it vulnerable and allowing the Candida yeast to proliferate.
Moldy and yeast-containing foods must also be avoided, as they can aggravate symptoms of Candida too. This means some vegetables, condiments, sauces, coffee, tea, and packaged and processed foods.

Stress
Stress affects your body in two ways, both of which can lead to excess Candida. One of your body's first reactions to a stressful situation is to release Cortisol, a hormone that depresses your immune system and raises your blood sugar level.
The Candida yeast feeds on the extra sugar, while your weakened immune system cannot stop it. It overpowers the balanced mixture of microorganisms in your small intestine.
Prolonged stress can also weaken your adrenal glands, which are an important part of your immune system.

Chlorine and Fluoride
Both chlorine and fluoride kill the beneficial bacteria in your gut. This weakens your immune system and allows the small number of Candida yeast cells in your gut to grow into a Candida infestation.

Diabetes
Candida is just one of many conditions that Diabetes can bring about, and diabetic women are particularly susceptible to any yeast infection. An elevated blood sugar level feeds the Candida yeast, allowing it grow quickly and dominate the other microorganisms in your gut.

Worm and Parasites
Worm and parasites can get into your intestinal system, causing disturbances to the healthy bacteria and allowing Candida to grow.

Symptoms of Candida

If many of the symptoms and factors listed below apply to you, it is likely that you're suffering from candidiasis:

  • Bloating and discomfort, especially after meals
  • Griping pains in your lower abdomen
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Fatigue or muscle weakness
  • Muscle or joint pains, or arthritis
  • 'Brain fog', feelings of unreality or memory loss
  • Thrush, athlete's foot, ringworm or fungal infection of your nails
  • Urinary tract infection or vaginal discharge
  • Depression or tearfulness
  • 'Low' immune system and frequent infections
  • Sensitivities to foods, tobacco smoke, chemical odours or perfume
  • Cravings for sugar, bread or alcohol
  • Symptoms worse on damp, muggy days or in damp, mouldy places
Conventional medicine still refuses to recognise Candida as a serious medical condition other than thrush. It can easily be cured simply by following a low-carbohydrate diet (7-day damage control program) and taking (Manna Candida Support) which stem the overgrowth of yeast.

Test for Candida

There are a variety of tests that practitioners use to diagnose yeast overgrowth, that may include stool tests, blood tests, live blood cell tests, etc., but the truth is that none of these tests are really reliable. They may or may not detect an infection of Candidiasis.

The simple most effective way to know if you have a yeast problem is by your symptoms. The very best and most accurate test to identify yeast overgrowth is the written questionnaire that you can find in Dr. Crook's book called "The Yeast Connection."

Another very popular test that many natural health practitioners use is called the "spit test." However, I would like to point out that some health practitioners do not feel this test is reliable. It has a high rate of false negatives and false positives. Personally, I do not advocate the spit test, but you will find other practitioners who stand behind it whole heartedly. So, I am going to provide the directions below in case you're interested, but please be aware of its potential limits. Here's how you do it:

As soon as you wake up in the morning before you put anything in your mouth, get a glass of water in a clear glass that you can see through. Don't use tap water.

Collect saliva in your mouth with your tongue and spit it into the glass.

Now keep an eye on your saliva in the glass for the next 15 minutes and observe what it does.
According to advocates of this method, if you see any of the following, then it indicates the presence of yeast colonies:

Your saliva stays at the top and you see thin strands that look like strings or spider legs extending downward.

Your saliva floats to the bottom and looks cloudy.

Your saliva is suspended in mid-air and looks like little specs are floating.

Step-by Step Guide to Tame Candida with Nutrition

Because Candida feeds on sugars, and all carbohydrates are digested to sugars, you can only defeat it by keeping to a low-carbohydrate diet and completely avoiding all sweetened foods, honey, fruit juices, dried and fresh fruit. Also avoid milk and dairy products (with the exception of organic butter), because of their high content of the sugar lactose and antibiotic residues.

In addition, cut out all foods that contain yeast, or have been fermented or pickled, since these encourage the growth of Candida. These include yeast extract, stock cubes, most types of bread, alcoholic drinks, cheese, black tea, and anything containing vinegar.

Eat plenty of salad, fish, poultry, meat and fresh vegetables (apart from the starchy ones like potatoes, parsnips and carrots). Try to obtain organic poultry and meat to avoid antibiotic residues.

When preparing meals, include liberal amounts of garlic, ginger and extra-virgin olive oil, and herbs such as rosemary, thyme, marjoram and lemon balm - which have strong anti-fungal properties.
